Student Julea Ward dismissed from Eastern Michigan University because she would not affirm homosexual behaviour

A lawsuit has been filed against Eastern Michigan University after school officials dismissed student Julea Ward from the school’s counseling program for not affirming homosexual behavior as morally acceptable.

"Christian students shouldn’t be penalized for holding to their beliefs," said ADF Senior Counsel David French. "When a public university has a prerequisite of affirming homosexual behavior as morally good in order to obtain a degree, the school is stepping over the legal line.

EMU requires students in its program to affirm or validate homosexual behaviour within the context of a counseling relationship and prohibits students from advising clients that they can change their homosexual behavior.

What type of a university is this? Same sex attraction is a disorder and there are many people who need help in being cured of it or at least given strategies to lead a healthy life free from homosexual behaviours.

As a councilor, it would be important to try and help these people. Telling them that homosexual behaviour is something good only makes their problems worse. Julea Ward has done the right thing in refusing to affirm homosexual behaviour as good when it is not. Julea has a moral obligation to inform them of the dangers of homosexual behaviour.

"Same sex attraction is a disorder."

I'll mention this before everyone else does. The American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its disordered list over 25 years ago. What that means in psychology programs in US universities is everyone has to conform to the "standard" of accepting homosexuality as normative.

What this does show is just how "normative" these programs are. By accepting ideals that lead to immoral behavior, the APA has basically removed itself from common sense standards of morality - to the point that school officials can dismiss a student for holding a belief different from their own. This rigid belief system, stemming from gay activism, is more inflexible than the morality they hoped to replace.

I've heard that many members of the American Psychiatric Association were pressured into removing homosexuality from its list.

This little error has had serious consequences 25 years later.

This seems to be the conventional wisdom. There was no new breakthroughs or substantive research at the time to overturn the previous view of homosexuality as abnormal behavior. Therefore, there has been much interest in knowing what the basis of the APA's reversal was.
